Coffee, Community and a New Corner for Kensington High Street

A new independent café has opened on Kensington High Street, bringing a coffee and all-day brunch venue to a prominent spot opposite the Design Museum.

The café at 281 Kensington High Street begins its soft opening on 21 August, with the team behind Over Under converting the unit into a neighbourhood-focused venue aimed at residents, workers and visitors to the area.

The operator already runs cafés in Earls Court and Wandsworth Town, with the new Kensington site becoming its latest London location.

The opening adds another independent food and drink business to the high street at a time when maintaining footfall and encouraging a varied mix of local businesses remains an important issue for town centres across London.

The team said it wants the venue to become more than simply another place to pick up a takeaway coffee.

“We want this to feel like a proper local café, not just another stop on the high street,” the team said.

“Good coffee and good food bring people together, and this space is designed for neighbours to get to know each other, from morning coffees to long brunches.”

The café includes seating for individuals and small groups and is dog-friendly, with an interior featuring wood, textured finishes, stainless steel and fluted glass.

Its menu includes speciality coffee, matcha, pastries and all-day brunch dishes, with several items being introduced specifically for the Kensington location, including Chilli Scramble, Turkish Eggs and a signature waffle.

The business hopes its position close to Holland Park, the Design Museum and surrounding residential streets will help it develop a regular local customer base.

“We’re excited to meet our new neighbours and become part of the community,” the team added.

“We hope this will be the kind of place where you recognise faces, stop for a chat and feel at home whether you’re popping in for a quick coffee or staying for brunch.”

As part of the opening, invitations and flyers are being distributed to nearby residents and businesses, with complimentary coffees being offered to local neighbours during the launch period.

The café is initially expected to operate from early morning until late afternoon on weekdays, with brunch service at weekends and selected evening events planned.
